Dear Citizens,

I am running for re-election because I love this City. I can’t think of any place I would rather live and raise my boys then here in Bellingham. For the last 8 years I have fought to keep neighborhood protection and quality of life issues at the forefront of the Council’s agenda. At a time when our City government is going through major transitions with a new mayor, deputy major and several new council members, I bring 8 years of experienced, principled, progressive, leadership to address the difficult issues facing our city, which include : the waterfront redevelopment, downtown revitalization, neighborhood protection and our Lake Whatcom Reservoir.

I bring a unique prospective to the council that is important. I have been married to my wife Jennifer for 29 years. We have two sons ages 12 and 16. I am the only Council member with school age children. I understand the needs and problems of working families. I am in touch with busy families at sporting events at the ball fields, as well as school events. There are many people who are too busy to attend council meetings, but they let me know what is important to them at these events. I have over 15 years experience in the criminal justice system, which is one of our biggest budget items. I am a Viet Nam Veteran with a background in psychology and social services. I provide a voice on issues of social justice and civil rights for those least able to speak for themselves. I have received the formal endorsements from the Whatcom County Democrats, the Bellingham Fire Fighters, The Northwest Central Labor Council, the Rainbow Coalition and other groups including endorsements from leaders in business, labor, the environment, builders, neighborhood groups and the social justice community. This is a coalition that I am proud of.

During my first two terms on the City Council we have seen many positive changes to Bellingham. We built the Depot Market and completed the Taylor Dock. The corners of Holly and Railroad were transformed from blight to "the Place to be". We created the Public Facility District and revamped the Mt. Baker Theater and now the wonderful new Art and Children Museum is on the way. Where we had no new housing starts in our downtown for decades, we now have hundreds of new residences with many more on the way. We purchased over 1,200 acres in the Lake Whatcom watershed to keep it from development and further degradation of our reservoir. Our economy has been turned around with an unemployment rate at all time lows. I am proud of what we have done and of the leadership that I have provided on these issues. Looking forward, I see such great potential for what Bellingham can become. Working together, we can become a city of true distinction. I would love to work with you, the citizens of Bellingham, for another 4 years, and I would appreciate your vote in November. Thank you.
